Habits that can save your life when working on a roof

· Occupational Safety

We have spent a good deal of time discussing roof safety systems on the many other blogs that we have published earlier, from scaffolding, fall protection to lifts. You should remember that even if you have the best safety systems in the world, your behaviour is what will save you from falling off and dying. Today, we will talk about some good habits that can save your life on a roof.

Never step backwards

This sounds simple, but a lot of peoplestepbackwards when working on a roof. This could be a critical mistake that could even cost you your life. If you have been concentrating on your work then you haven’t been paying attention to your steps. This means that you don’t know exactly where you are. Safety monitors, warning lines and other roof safety solutions should be put aside. A small change in behaviour can save your life.

Never look at the phone while walking

When walking on top of the roof, you should avoid looking at the phone or any other distractions. The roof is no place for distraction. If your company does not have a phone policy then you should leave the work area and take a phone call. Not paying attention while walking on the roof can cause you to step somewhere dangerous or bump into a co-worker and cause an accident.

Avoid climbing over anything

Whether skylights, equipment, or other obstacles, if you are not sure what is on the other side, find another way. We know you have great balance but still, you can end up falling.

Slow down when approaching a ladder or an edge

Your roof safety systems will not save you if you slide from the edge and fall. When approaching a ladder or an edge, slow down to avoid sliding.
